Geography
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is situated in the Windward Islands of the Lesser Antilles in the southern Caribbean Sea, where its closest neighbour is St. Lucia.
The nation consists of the larger island, Saint Vincent and 32 smaller islands and cays, called the Grenadines, which spread to the south of Saint Vincent. The most major of these islands, in order from north to south, are: Young Island, Bequia, Mustique, Canouan, Mayreau, Union Island, Palm Island and Petit St. Vincent.
The islands have not been hugely developed in terms of tourism, although they do have a growing tourism industry and there is huge potential here for growth over the coming years. Since the Pirates of the Caribbean was filmed here, the island has grown somewhat in popularity!
Saint Vincent is a mountainous island and is therefore difficult to travel from one side to the other. The nation’s capital, Kingstown, is situated in the south of the island and has several features of appeal to visitors: Kingstown Market is a lively market place selling local produce and fish as well as local arts and crafts, whilst St Mary’s Catholic Church is an unbelievable mix of architectures and looks quite out of place here! St. Vincent’s Botanical Gardens are the oldest in the western hemisphere, established in 1762 and are popular with visitors. Fort Charlotte is also a favourite spot on Berkshire Hill, 600 feet above the town.
Being the Caribbean, St. Vincent and the Grenadines most popular attraction is the beaches and the warm Caribbean Sea. There are also some fantastic diving opportunities here too.
The climate here is tropical and hence there is not much seasonal variation in temperatures. The only difference is that the rainy season lasts from May to November.
History
The original island inhabitants of St. Vincent defended themselves from colonisation from Europeans until into the 1700’s, when finally French settlers came in 1719. Between then and 1783 control passed between the French and the British several times before the British took eventual control and it remained a British colony until independence in 1979.
Cuisine
Cuisine on St Vincent and the Grenadines does not vary much from the typical Caribbean cuisine you will find on the majority of other islands in this part of the world. Use of locally grown produce is very popular and seafood usually features highly. There is a good mix of restaurants, ranging from take-away type food to more up-market dining and restaurants within hotels.
Currency
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines currency is the East Caribbean Dollar; a currency shared with 7 other nations. There are 100 cents in one EC Dollar (EC$) and the exchange rate is tied to the US Dollar, which is also widely accepted across the islands.
Language
As St. Vincent and the Grenadines has been a British colony for many years the official language is English though the majority of the local population speaks Vincentian Creole.
