Bulgaria
Bulgaria is an increasingly popular destination for tourists because of the rich diversity the country can offer, being able to provide something for everyone and because it is reasonably priced compared with much of Western Europe. The Bulgarian real estate market is more advanced than you might expect, offering a large range of properties to suit all tastes and range of budgets and there is much new development going on.
Geography
Located in south-east Europe, Bulgaria’s eastern edge is on the Black Sea whilst it borders with Turkey, Greece, Macedonia, Yugoslavia and Romania. The country offers a diverse range of landscapes which explains its common appeal as a tourist destination. From its alpine mountain ranges of Rila and Pirin, offering excellent skiing opportunities to the Black Sea coast with mild climate and attractive beaches, to the shores of the River Danube which flows along the majority of the country’s northern border. Bulgaria’s capital and largest city is Sofia, situated to the west.
Properties for sale in Bulgaria are currently offered by Vogue Estates in the country’s two most popular areas: the ski resort of Bansko and along the Black Sea Coast. Bankso is at the foot of Pirin Mountain and as well as offering skiing in the winter it is a attractive resort for the summer too; popular with hikers and with numerous lakes in the area.
The Black Sea Coast offers a number of resort areas. Sunny Beach is the largest and most popular of these, having been undergoing expansion for many years. It offers a good mix of sandy beaches, along with restaurants and nightlife. Along from here is the smaller resort of Sveti Vlas; a quieter alternative with its own marina. To the south is the town of Tsarevo which offers a different option to the typical tourist resorts as this is more of an urban area serving as the municipal centre for the Burgas Province.
The climate along the Black Sea Coast is quite considerably warmer than the rest of the country, with its Mediterranean influence. It has hot and dry summers and cooler, wetter winters though these are milder than the cold winters in the rest of the country
History
From the 14th century, Bulgaria was part of the Ottoman Empire and remained that way right up until the late 19th century when the Russo-Turkish wars defeated the Turks. Bulgaria became fully independent in 1908.
During both the World Wars Bulgaria fought on the side of Germany and in 1944 the Soviet army entered Bulgaria resulting in a Communist uprising and the establishment of a Communist state, forcing Bulgaria to turn against Germany.
Held behind the iron curtain until 1989, Bulgaria then introduced a multi-party political system and in January 2007 became a member of the EU.
Cuisine
Bulgarian cuisine is traditionally south-eastern European with influences from its neighbouring countries. Most renowned for its salads and variety of both hot and cold soups and pastries, plus various alcoholic drinks, including Bulgaria’s own wines and other local alcoholic recipes.
